The First ER Visit

On Mondays and Tuesdays I work late, until around 10pm usually. Josh calls those days daughtermas, daughter fest, or daddy daughter days. Josh and Olivia usually hang out together outside doing yard work or cleaning cars. Two weeks ago on Tuesday Josh decided he wanted to wash his truck. At the time he thought it was a great idea. Olivia can play outside, which is her favorite thing to do, and he can do something productive with the day. I left for work just as he was starting, Olivia was in her walker enjoying her new found freedom and Josh was spraying his truck down. I got a call from Josh while I was at work, something that does not happen too often. When I called him back I heard "I had to take your daughter to the ER", if that does not make you heart jump into your throat I don't know what will. I immediately thought of the worse case scenario, she hit her head and she is gushing blood, she fell out of her walker and broke her neck, or she got into some chemicals in the garage and drank them. Instead I heard, "She ate some mint from the garden and choked" She apparently ate some mint and josh caught her doing it. He immediately extracted it from her mouth. At that point she was breathing fine, she was so good they stayed outside for a little longer. When it was time for her bottle Josh took her inside and tried to feed her. She drank a little, then she started choking, she could not breath at all, she was turning red. Josh panicked, turned her over and patted her back, she coughed up some mucous and a little blood. He was still a little freaked out but she was breathing so he played with her for a couple more minutes, just to make sure she was ok, then he tried giving her the bottle again. She choked again, he thought either she is having an allergic reaction or there is something caught down there. He took no chances and took her straight to the ER. Of course, they had to wait for hours to be seen and once they were seen the doctor basically took one look at her and said "She looks fine" and that was it. The whole experience was more upsetting for Josh, I felt so bad for him. Now he wont let Olivia eat anything bigger then the tip of a pen. When she starts to cough he jumps like she is choking.
